Stressed? Just mow the lawn.

Stressed? Just mow the lawn.

Researchers have discovered that a chemical released by a mown lawn makes people feel happy and relaxed, and could prevent mental decline in old age.

They claim it works directly on the brain, in particular the sections responsible for emotion and memory known as the amygdala and the hippocampus. Now scientists claim to have developed a perfume, that “smells like a freshly cut lawn”, and offers the same benefits.

The Australian experts produced the “eau de mow” after seven years of research.mow

Dr Nick Lavidis, a neuroscientist at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, first came up with the idea for the perfume, named Serenascent, while on a nature walk in Yosemite National Park.

Students working on the project found that animals exposed to Serenascent – which combines three chemicals released when green leaves are cut – did not develop damage to the hippocampus that is the usual result of exposure to chronic stress.

The scent is said to have the “pleasant aroma of a freshly cut lawn or a walk through a lush forest”.

It will go into production next month and will sell for about £4 a bottle.

Dr Lavidis said: “It can be used as a room spray or a personal spray on bed linen, a handkerchief or clothing.”

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
