“The Hours”, which is our Viewing Group title of the month stars three of cinema’s most acclaimed actresses of the modern day and is based on a Pulitzer Prize winning novel. Winner of a number of Golden Globe awards, the film attracted excellent reviews without being a major box office success. The film follows a single day in the lives of three women in different time periods as they are each confronted with life changing decisions. The 1920’s story concerns Virginia Woolf (Nicole Kidman) and her efforts to write her first successful novel, “Mrs Dallaway”; which is the story of one day in the life of a woman named Clarissa Dallaway. The story set in the early 1950’s concerns Laura Brown (Julianne Moore), a woman who is reading “Mrs Dallaway”. Finally the contemporary story concerns Clarissa Vaughn (Meryl Streep) who is essentially living Mrs. Dallaway’s life in modern New York. All three actresses give wonderful performances, clearly enjoying playing off each other.
With a film score from Philip Glass this is a film with powerful themes and will prove rewarding to anyone looking for a film to challenge their emotions and stimulate and provoke response long afterwards.
